The Eternal Rival
McDonald's And Burger King
Q. When you think of International Burger Franchisee, what do you have in your mind?
There is no doubt that 'McDonald's' and 'Burger King' will be the first two brands that pop up in your mind among others. However, there is a small trick in this burger rivieras. The average profit that McDonald's made last year was $2.4 million and Burger King earned $1.2 million. In turn, looking at the scale of revenue that both Burger Franchisees obtained shows that Burger King is not actual rival to McDonald's such as Coca-cola and Pepsi. This is one of marketing strategies that Burger King is utilizing in order to manipulate customers perception of top 2 Burger Franchisees. Now Let's move on to the histories of both McDonald's and Burger King.
The History of McDonald's
The First Restaurant of McDonald's was first established in Illinois, USA in April 1955 by Ray Kroc. It is currently closed and was opened for a while as a museum. However, before the opening of first McDonald's store by Ray Kroc, there were two founders of McDonald's: Richard James McDonald and Maurice James McDonald. As you can see from their last name, the brand name of McDonald's was created from that brothers.
In the beginning of McDonald's, they did not plan to expand their burger house just like today. Their store was focused on drive-through. At that time, people were used to the burger store that women wearing with rollers and serving to burgers to the customers. But, for the people who needed to take burgers in a short time like launch time were not able to order burgers. This inspired McDonald's brothers to change the marketing strategy from traditional style to modern style of burger house. They did not hired part time workers and made customers to order their own foods which can be called as specialization and division of cooking burgers. It was a huge sensation to a number of people since the time for preparing burgers was reduced in half.
While McDonald Brothers were having success in their towns, Ray Kroc was working as a blender salesman. The fact that McDonald brothers were purchasing a lot of blenders interested Ray to pay attention to Franchisee of this burger store. So, they both agreed to run McDonald's with the investment from Ray Kroc. But, the motto and directional nature of burger business of both founders were heading to different directions. McDonald brothers did not satisfy with the business plan that Ray Kroc had in his mind which was to enlarge McDonald's as a global brand. Therefore, later on Ray Kroc bought all of shares of McDonald's with high price and became a major stockholder of its business.
By the way, do you know how McDonald's expanded their business rapidly in a short time?
The answer comes from a rental fee. The original franchisees at that time permitted to open a new store only for those who already had lands and got cheap price for the name of franchisee. But, this was a significant burden to people who did not have their own lands. In contrast, McDonald's had different skills. They firstly bought lands and asked franchisee stores to pay fees of Franchisee and rental fee for a month like a monthly installment plan. This was a secret of McDonald's.
The History of Burger King
The Name of Burger King is not the original name. Actually, the original name of Burger King was Insta-Burger King. It was opened in Miami in 1953 by Keith J. Kramer and his wife's uncle whose name is Matthew Burns. As similar to McDonald's, the Insta burger king was one of famous burger stores in the region of Jacksonville.
On the other side of Burger King history, James McLamore and David R. Edgerton were colleges of Cornell University School of Hotel Administration . One day they had a chance to visit McDonald's and determined to initiate the franchisee business, and it was a such a nice timing for them to take over Insta-burger king. Since Insta Burger King was having troubles in terms of management, they had sell their store. So, after a management buyout James and David Sixty opened a first Burger King at 3090 N.W. 36th Street in Miami.
Later on, Pillsbury company which is bread making firm purchases Burger King so that the history of McLamore and Dabid R. Edgerton's Burger Kings finally concluded at this moment. Currently, Pillsbury corp is exercising active marketing strategy in order to catch up the market share of McDonald's all over the world.
The Main Items Of Burger King and McDonald's
Whopper and Big Mac
I know you have already experienced these both burgers from Burger King and McDonald's. But, for those who want to know details of both burgers I wrote a brief ingredients of its.
Burger Kings's Whopper is a ¼ lb of savory flame-grilled beef topped with juicy tomatoes, fresh lettuce, creamy mayonnaise, ketchup, crunchy pickles, and sliced white onions on a soft sesame seed bun. Served with a small side of piping hot, thick cut French Fries or golden Onion Rings and a small fountain drink of your choice to make it a meal.
McDonald's Big Mac is composed of two sear-sizzled 100% pure beef patties and Big Mac sauce, sandwiched between a sesame seed bun. American cheese, shredded lettuce, onions and pickles top it off.

I Do Not Believe The Advertisement Of Every Restaurants
So What? I Visited To Check It Fellows !!!!!! Hurray!!!
I visited a Burger King and Mcdonald's which are both located in Çankaya/Ankara. To be honest, the taste of whopper was better than Big Mac of McDonald's. ( It is purely based on my humble tongue, so, never judge both burger before you taste it. !! I am just delivering the taste of my experience !!)
Whopper is bigger than Big Mac in terms of size of it and the meat inside the bread was well burned since I could feel the smell of meat from the grills. But, I will give hand to McDonald besides the burger. The fried potatoes from Burger King was not that crispy compared to McDonald's. When we eat a burger from any place, for me fried potato is one of biggest factors that I decide evaluate the menu. Because Burger !!!! cannot Never!!! ever!!!! separated with fried potatoes ( I am fried potato holic)

An Uygur Spirit In Dishes
Urumci Uygur Restaurant
It has been a week since I posted my previous Chinese restaurant in Tunali. I was actually looking for a nice place in Ankara and got some recommendations from my friends. So, among those this Uygur restaurant was chosen for this week's post !
For foreigners especially who do not have any relations with Turkish or Chinese, it is quite difficult to recognize Uygur people. An Uygur community is currently one of minorities that is living in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Turkey and China , and according to statistic in 2000 its population has reached up to 8,399,393. Also, it is part of Turkish ethnic group that Chinese government acknowledged among other 56 minorities in China. They have their own language and majority of population is based on Islam. This would be enough for brief explanation for the Uygur.
The first impression which I got from this restaurant was that it was very crowd and the waiters were super friendly to us. The funny thing was that since they have Asian appearance one of the waiters was almost exactly looking same with my friend in Korea who is in military service right now. (hahah !, my future to.. soooo pity)
When we just entered this place, there was no seat for us outside. Therefore, we took our seats and surfed into the menus. But, later on there was a chance to move our seat to outside. So what? We went out. Oh ! By the way, they firstly served us with a warm tea. ( Really enjoyed that tea )
As you can see from the menu, the price is set in affordable price. We ordered more than 6 meals, but it only costed 70 TL. This is a major merit that you could consider when you visit some places to have some foods. In terms of details of a menu, they only had Turkish and Uygur in written. This was a bit weakest point for this restaurant. However, since all the images were also in the menu so that we were able to decide our dishes. I hope more restaurants could have menus in English. This will attract more guests in long term ! Here are some foods that we ordered. Ummm.. Yammmy..
Overall, this Uygur restaurant satisfied us in many perspectives.
1. The location was next to a huge park named Kurtlus Park. So, it was not that hard to visit them.
2. The Price was not that expensive.
3. They had enough space to serve many guests. This provides us some impression of comfort.
4. The tastes of the meals that we ate in this place were different from other Turkish restaurants. They had their own tastes and some of them had similar tastes to my home country which is South Korea. (But, the dumpling had too much spices in it.)
In one sentence, I enjoyed a lot and willing to visit again before I leave Turkey after my graduation on 17th of June. ( This is hint for next post.. ! )
Just like before, I hope you got useful info in my post and catch up with next one as well.
See ya !!!

A Chinese Restaurant in Tunali
Wuyang Chinese Restaurant
This time I came with the Chinese restaurant in Tunali. I am pretty sure that if you have even been to the Tunus street then it is impossible to pass the place. Wuyang Chinese Restaurant is one of oldest Asian restaurants in Ankara. It is especially well-known for people who are working for public sectors and transnational companies since the location of its is near Korean Embassy and other Asian Embassies as well.
This place is also interesting place for me. When I was living in Istanbul, my father used to come for a business trip in Ankara and this restaurant was the only place that has Korean foods due to large demands from Korean people. So, before I began my life in Bilkent University, Wuyang restaurant was the sole place that I knew in Ankara among all other restaurants including Turkish cuisines.
By the way, on this day me and my friends went to Korean embassy for the presidential election. Let me talk little bit about our country's political circumstances. The president Park was impeached a few month ago so that we had to vote for earlier than usual. Since we are staying abroad, we had to visit the embassy faster than people who reside in Korea right now. This was my second time voting for the president, thus, I was feeling more comfort than the time when I first chose my leader. Anyway, after this took a taxi and came back to Tunus street.
Just like other restaurants in this street, Wuyang offers two choices for seats:outside and inside. But, I recommend you to seat inside during winter since they do not have heating system outside. So, as you can see from the image, mainly seats are composed of 4 people. If you have more than 4 people, ask a waiter to guide you inside. There will be rounding tables that accommodates nearly 8 people.
As a Korea, the price of Wuyang was expensive considering the fact that some foods can be made very easily in locals. But, as you know, when same foods are exported and made in foreign countries, the price arises. Therefore, understanding that logic the price was acceptable for us and it was a time to regret our home meals. In perspective of non-Asian, I assume that if you have large stomach to fulfill then it would not enough for you to enjoy it with the money less than 40 TL. For those who would be interested about the menu and the price, I have photos. Check it and make you decision if you have a chance to go there.
Wuyang provides more than 60 menus including Chinese, Japanese and Korean. So, if you want to feel those three foods in one place I will defensively advise you to go there and try various tastes of its. Also, they gave us Kim-chi for appetizer and it was quite happy to see in a Chinese restaurant. But, don't forget that the taste has some difference between the locals and to some extent tastes are bit changed for adjusting to Turkish people's tastes.
We order more than 8 foods and among them the rice with shrimp mostly delighted our tongues for this day in terms of quality and quantity.
Overall, this restaurant offers various foods including Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Also, the location of its which is in the Tunali and close to embassies can attract many people. However, in regard to price, it is not enough for you to enjoy many menus less than 30 - 40 TL assuming that you are the one who loves to eat a lot.
Thanks for keeping up with my post and see you later with my another post soon.

The Best Turkish Food With 40 Years Of History
Bilkent Sözeri Pide & Kebab
1) How I entered into Turkish Food?
Turkish food is one of well-known international foods and sometimes it is described as top 3 foods among other global cuisines. Also, it has a variety of 'mouthwatering' traditional meals such as Kebab, Pide and Lahmacun.
The first Turkish food in my life was an 'Adana kebab'. However, the intriguing part is that I had that amazing food in my mouth in 'Iteawon district' in Seoul which is the capital city of South Korea. The name of the Turkish restaurant was 'Sultan Kebab'. Still, it is nearly impossible to forget the humble and smiling face of the cook when I first entered the place through the door. As I mentioned my personal experience, nowadays Turkish food became a global cuisine and it seems that no one can tackle on this point.

As I mentioned my personal experience, nowadays Turkish food became a global cuisine and it seems that no one can tackle on this point.
Let me stop here with the recollection of first entry into Turkish food. Today in my 'first' post, I will introduce a Turkish restaurant called 'Bilkent Sözeri Pide & Kebab' in Ankara since the place where I live right now is Turkey. Sözeri Pide & Kebab restaurant was the first place that I visited after I came to Bilkent University. So, sometimes when I miss my family and have hard time with homesick, they alleviate my aboard loneliness with their delicious food.
2) How can I go to 'Sözeri Pide & Kebab' restaurant?
For Bilkent Students, this photo will help you to bring there. Bilkent Sözeri Pide & Kebab is located on the way to the Ptt center in Bilkent University and the international students office that foreign students have to know for sure. If you know the 78 dorm then it becomes more easier to get there since this is the photo of the building of 78 dorm. Can you see the road next to the Yapikredi ATM? Follow it until you see the Sözeri right next to you.
For those who are not Bilkent University students, do not worry. Firstly, you must come in the campus. If you take a bus or a car you must pass the security check at the main entrance of the university. There is no way for visitors to pass the East and West entrance. So, it is a small tip that will save your time to get Sözeri. After you are done with the identification process at the main entrance, go straight until you see the 78 dorm and take the road next to Yapikredi ATM then you will face it. I know you are pretty hungry, but make yourself calm down and follow my guide. If you can still not find it then ask Bilkent students on the campus. Because Bilkent University students are soooooooooo nice to everyone!
3) Interior & Atmosphere
The interior of Sözeri is not quite different from other Turkish traditional food restaurants. They have a kitchen inside and as you can see the check counter is placed at the door. The tables inside the restaurant are mostly for 4 people. If you are more than 4 people then do not hesitate and ask a waiter to put the tables together.
The kindness of people working in Sözeri cannot be compared to any places in Ankara. When ever you ask something in this place they help and serve you with their best. I was trying to ask waiters to take photo together. But, since they were too busy at that time, I could not be with them together in photos. Overall, the atmosphere of Sözeri can be described as 'cozy' like in a sweet home.
3) What kinds of foods?
Sözeri is a restaurant which is specialized on Pide and Kebab with some side dishes. If you can see the menu that I posted, there are many kinds of Pides and Kebabs. So, choose any food that allures you at the first time. This time I ordered 'Mantarlı pide' which can be translated into a kebab with mushroom in it and Karışık kebab which means that different types of kebabs are combined in one plate. Just like other days in Sözeri, Mantarlı pide and Karışık kebab did not disappoint me. You might be curious about the actual taste of the Pide and Kebab and how is it different from other kebab and pide restaurants.
In terms of Mantarlı pide, it has a crunch bread with moist ingredients tangled all together. Also, since Sozeri makes foods right after the orders, most of them are delivered to tables of customers in hot and hot condition. In contrast, I had some experiences that some Turkish restaurants which cook Pide did not maintained the temperature, thus, the tastes was downgraded. This could be the most distinguished part of Sozeri.
In case of Karışık kebabs, several kebabs are clustered in it. However, if you are not friendly with either chickens or beefs then there is no need to be agonized. You can tell them and replace beef kebabs into chickens and vice versa. What is nice about the taste of this kebab is that all the ingredients are well harmonized and peppers are not super hot since I am a person who cannot bear terrifically spicy. Moreover, Sozeri seems to manage very well for the typical smell of beefs. These are the distinctive aspects of Sozeri compared to other restaurants.
If you are looking forward to have these foods in your house, they have delivery service. But, unfortunately, it is only able for those who reside close to Sözeri. If you are a foreigner who cannot speak Turkish then order it via 'Yemeksepeti' which is a delivery application that provides English.

For the next post, I will address the Asian foods in Turkey. For those who have much interests in Asian foods! Do not miss the recommendation by the Korean guy who knows the real tastes of Asian foods. See you !
